Summary
Considering a computer not just as an office or communication tool, but as an educational platform first, we plan to develop literacy at the same time as network communications. This angle slightly rearranges priorities and roles, transforming cybercafes and telecentres into learning centres for adults and children, particularly in places where there are no schools, or where the educational infrastructure and materials are insufficient. The computer is seen not just as a window to the outside world, but first, as a companion and a guide in the necessary journey of knowledge. ISF’s LIFE project proposes an open source free environment as a powerful operating system and a learning platform at the same time.
